Dr. Hurst is the co-founder of The Smile Store and Candid aligners, as well as a thriving board certified Orthodontist. Dr. Hurst served as the Founding Dean for the College of Dental Medicine and Director of Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics/Master of Business Administration Residency Program at the Roseman University of Health Sciences. Since 2009 Dr. Hurst has served as the Founding President, CEO and Orthodontist at Texas Orthodontics. In 2017 Dr. Hurst co-founded and serves as Chief Clinical Officer at Candid™️. Dr. Hurst is a member of and actively involved in numerous professional and dental associations. He started humbly as a student and graduated from Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas), in 1979, with a Bachelor of Arts major degree in Biology and minor degree in Chemistry. In 1984, Dr. Hurst received his DDS with Honors from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), followed by his certificate and Master of Science degree in Orthodontics from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Hurst entered private practice in San Antonio, Texas, where he practiced orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics for 20 years. After 1 year in practice, in 1987, he joined the orthodontic faculty at UTHSCSA and has been involved in orthodontic education and research since then. In 1993, Dr. Hurst completed Phase III of board certification, in orthodontics, achieving the status of Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontics and in 2003, was one of only 30 orthodontists to be recertified, as a Diplomate. From 2001-2005, Dr. Hurst served as Program Director of the newly established Orthodontic Residency Program at UTHSCSA. From 2007-2009.

What inspired you to go into orthodontic medicine and how did you get started?

I’ve always been interested in orthodontics for as long as I can remember. I was blessed enough to know what I wanted to do at an early age, then dedicate my life to that.

What do you love most about orthodontic medicine?

The best part of orthodontic medicine is providing real results for patients. The confidence and self esteem boost can change a person’s entire life.

What do you wish more people knew about orthodontic medicine?

 A lot of health issues can be attributed to a misaligned bite. Your smile being straightened increases brain activity, helps maintain digestion, and boosts confidence. A straighter smile can decrease your chance for heart disease, diabetes and helps you age gracefully. A beautiful smile can extend and better your life in many ways.

A lot of people are so used to thinking that going to the “dentist” has to be scary, painful and expensive. We go above and beyond to provide affordable treatment that millions of people can easily access. What can a guest expect from an appointment with you? What's it going to be like? 

A smile store exam is simple and straightforward. We will capture 8 diagnostic photos, take x-rays, then perform an intraoral scan. We will review  helpful information then ask a few medical questions to ensure our Doctors curate the best custom treatment plan for you.

Why is preventive care so important in orthodontic medicine?

Preventative care is essential, your teeth are always shifting and moving. Little by little and some people don’t notice until it’s too late. Your teeth help to keep you healthy, you have to take care of them properly and The Smile Store is here to help.
